Born in Nirasaki City, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1935.
Graduated from University of Yamanashi.
Completes the master’s program at Graduate School of Science, the Tokyo University of Science. Serves as Professor at School of Pharmacy, President of the Kitasato Institute.
Becomes President of Joshibi University of Art and Design while serving at the Kitasato Institute.
Awarded with several important academic awards such as the Japan Academy Prize, Ernest Guenther Award in the Chemistry of Natural Products, Robert Koch Gold Medal and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2016.
Honored with Chevalier of the Ordre National de la Legion d’honneur (Chevalier), The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, the Order of Cultural Merit. Holds membership of academic societies such as the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, Japan Academy and others.
Currently President Emeritus of Joshibi University of Art and Design, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Kitasato University.
